April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The National Safety Council (NSC) established this month as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month more than 10 years ago. Knowing this (thank you, Lexus) we can’t help but agree that it’s a good time to regroup and reconsider the choices we make while on the road.
Today, as more of us are getting back on the road; making those daily drives to work and back to school, it important to remind ourselves and our fellow drivers of the importance of not texting while driving.
How long do you think it takes to read a quick text message when you’re driving? One second? Two seconds? The truth is that it actually takes 4.6 seconds to send or receive a text message when you are behind the wheel, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
We can all agree that distracted driving is dangerous. In fact, it claimed 3,142 lives in 2019 according to NHTSA with texting being the most common and alarming distraction. To put things in perspective, when driving at 55 mph, taking your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds is like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.
“Lexus wants to bring awareness to safety behind the wheel by changing perceptions about texting and driving,” said Vinay Shahani, vice president of Lexus marketing. “Even the most advanced safety systems on the road today can’t replace the undivided attention of the driver.”
To bring awareness to this important issue of texting and driving, Lexus released a new video called “Driving Disrupted” on April 6, 2021. In the video, Lexus demonstrates exactly what happens when drivers can no longer see the road for 4.6 seconds. Check it out below.
Lexus has definitely changed our minds about texting and driving in just 4.6 seconds. What about you? Has Lexus changed your mind about texting and driving? Whatever your answer, let’s all agree to put the phone down while behind the wheel. Let’s commit to safer driving. Let’s commit to no longer texting and driving.
On a final note, we want to thank Lexus for not only providing us with a much-needed reality check on the dangers of texting and drivingbut for also spreading the word that April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Great video, great message!
