GAS (INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE)
The traditional setup uses an engine that burns gasoline with no electric motor assistance. It's the baseline every other option is compared to. People still choose gas for good reasons. Refueling is fast and available everywhere. It's well suited to towing, hauling, and long highway stretches. And there are no new habits to learn. The tradeoffs are real too. Gas vehicles have the highest fuel costs over time, more scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, and more moving parts overall, along with the most emissions of the group.
Best candidate for gas: someone who drives long distances regularly, tows or hauls often, lives somewhere with limited charging access.

HYBRID (HEV)
A hybrid pairs a gas engine with a small electric motor and battery. The battery recharges on its own through regenerative breaking and the engine, so you never plug it in. At low speeds, such as stop and go traffic, the car can run on electric power alone for short bursts, which is where a lot of the fuel savings come from. Hybrids have grown quickly in popularity because they deliver noticeably better fuel economy, typically twenty-five to forty percent better than comparable gas models, without requiring any change in behavior. There's no charger to install, no range to plan around, and no new routine. You fill up at the same gas stations, just less often. This combination of zero effort and real savings is a big part of why hybrids have become one of the fastest growing powertrain types in the U.S. market.
Best candidate for a hybrid: someone who wants better gas mileage and lower running costs but doesn't have or want home charging access, isn't ready to commit to an EV lifestyle, and values an upgrade that requires no change to their current routine.

PLUG IN HYBRID (PHEV)
A PHEV is a hybrid with a bigger battery and a plug. It can typically drive twenty five to fifty miles on electricity alone, enough for most people's daily commute, and then seamlessly switches to acting like a regular hybrid once that charge runs out, using the gas engine as backup. There's no range anxiety, because gas is always available as a fallback. On paper it sounds close to perfect. For someone with a short commute and home charging, a PHEV can mean almost never buying gas day to day, while still having full road trip flexibility whenever needed.
Best candidate for a PHEV: someone with reliable home or workplace charging and a short daily commute, who also takes regular road trips and doesn't want to rely on public fast charging for those longer drives.

ELECTRIC (EV), FULLY ELECTRIC WITH NO GAS AT ALL
EVs run entirely on electricity, with no gas engine as backup. They offer the lowest running costs of any option, with no oil changes, no gas stations, and less brake wear thanks to regenerative breaking, along with instant torque and a quiet ride. The trade off is that EVs carry the highest upfront price tag of the group, even after recent price drops, and the day-to-day experience depends heavily on charging access. Home charging makes EV ownership seamless, while relying solely on public fast chargers makes it considerably less convenient.
Best candidate for an EV: someone who owns their home or has consistent access to a charger, has a shorter daily commute, and prioritizes the lowest long term running costs and emissions over upfront price.
